It is never easy to write the review of the new album to the legendary Iron Maiden. The group is so great and famous you still nostalgic comments from people who say that it was better before (a point that is not specifically wrong on one side) and the comments of some other people who can not not understand that a band can change its direction a little music, and always at the request hits "Fear of the Dark." Unfortunately for them, "A Matter of Life and Death", 14th release is the combo, is different… Really dark with a lot of progressive elements, I believe that those who want a new "The Number Of The Beast" will Disappointed, but anyone who (like me) believe that "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" is the best album group will, as the new version…
Strangely, I found only a song, "Different World", which follows the model of "Brave New World" and "Dance of Death". With its catchy chorus, it rapid pace (all other songs are usually slower), it will be easy for you to remember its melody, and if this song will live, in my opinion, it is certainly not the best song the album Because… On the other hand, "A Matter of Life and Death" is full of long (with an average length of September, the height or even nine minutes!) Mid-tempo songs, and those long songs follow the spirit of "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son." Dark and sad with some keyboards and many progressive elements, "These Colors Do not Run" or "For The Greater Good of God" for example are like small brothers of a song like "Moonchild." It is certainly not easy to access, it will never pass on a radio or in a club, but there is something good in these songs. It is not an "easy" Iron Maiden, and it is clear that the band worked a lot on this new version. The arrangements are complicated, the riffs are all but not commercial and since I love music gradually I began to like more and more new album. Of course, you will always have the opportunity to listen to the girl really special initial solid, but a song like "The Lord Of Light" is so dark and different that the second part of the song is really surprising for fans. The production is truly amazing, especially when we know that Steve Harris said recently it was recorded live in a position to give the audience a pure "old school" sound. For sure I know that some of you will be disappointed (and they may be right, after all), because the girl "hits" have disappeared but on the other hand, the new album is much better than (at least) their last four albums. Ok, it's different and you need time to "entering" "A Matter of Life and Death", but with time, I am willing to bet a lot of money that many will change their dissidents Opinion…
"A Matter of Life and Death" is probably not the best album from Iron Maiden and many people will be disturbed by the fact that this is not an album that will be easy to hear. But, as with "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" the group took risks and at the end, even if we do not have a dramatic songs, many pieces of this new CD are full of great things. It's different, never "happy" but these dark aspects that progressives can be found on most songs on the album are just cool. Finally, just remember this latter type… Do not be quick with this album, listen to it over and over again and you will see that at the end you will agree with me that it's really fun , as opposed From "Dance of Death", the complexity of "A Matter of Life and Death" shows that it is an interesting album. "A Matter of Life and Death" is proof that Iron Maiden is still surprise us with a few large original music.
