They are undoubtedly one of British rock's international success but Placebo seem almost sliding under the "Cool Radar" every time they release a record. The trio of London have done a remarkable career and extended by maintaining their ability to just enough progress since the last album, whether in the style or quality, to keep their existing fanbase happy while offering something ' a little different.
Meds pseudo-indie-pop goth median a familiar path, its reasonably standard mixture of radio-friendly songs ranging from fast-keyboard-beef, the numbers led to the heartstring-shooting, slow almost-ballads. It is strange from the runway, such as "Space Monkey", which shows a bit of experimentation and it is no coincidence. Interestingly sampling their own back catalog ( "Leni"), electronic, the song brings to mind the style of Bauhaus, and although it shows no change in focus, their willingness to test new waters is reassuring in this world of bland assembly of online music.
Placebo work has definitely progressed well over the last decade, gaining complexity and improving the standard of singing immeasurably from the days of simple classic 'Nancy Boy'. Unfortunately Brian Molko words are not matched the same level of advancement, and so we still have to bear witness to his implementation of some ridiculous rhymes in its strategies songwriting. The entire ambling 'Follow The Cops Back Home' results in the goth dwarf ending each line of every verse in something that fits in with the Jimmy Choo / Shampoo / You / Through / etc style. It starts to grate after a while.
Fortunately, there are also songs like "Infra-Red" and "Blue Post" in attendance. These are the kind of tracks that really remind you of what classic Placebo is: an ox, the rhythm section throughout functionality while Molko's laconic, disinterested vocal style only really comes alive during the chorus invigorating. When looking at the quality and duets - of VV Kills and Michael Stipe - it shows the esteem that their peers hold them in. Indeed, Stipe fresh appearance on "Broken Promise 'is both soothing and disturbing at a time, His voice complementing hot Molko's nasal vinegar perfectly that the song several times erupted explosively in a chorus.
Although there is nothing revolutionary here marginally, Placebo have still regularly returned with another record in Meds. Based on their past fortunes without undue discomfort or pending, it is a band who know their weaknesses, but ultimately this is a group that knows its own strengths, however limited they may they, and they display them with a good performance.
