After years of trying to get rid of its status as a legend like Led Zeppelin, 's, Robert Plant finally reconciled with his past on Now & Zen. He borrows a few Zeppelin riffs, and even appealed to Jimmy Page to play guitar for his hit "Tall Cool One." This album is also remarkable in that it marks his first collaboration with keyboardist Phil Johnstone, who continue to play and write at plants in the wake of albums. Musically, the album is based on standard rock arrangements, except that the voices and drums are at the forefront rather than keyboards and guitars are used to fill in the sound. Although most of the album is made up of songs mid-tempo rock on the radio, plants include the beautiful ballad "Ship of Fools", which shows that he is more than capable of vocal subtlety. Plant, which uses often mysterious (and mystical) lyrics, wrote some of his most direct songs, and how the lyrics complement the melodic arrangements are in part responsible for the commercial success of Now & Zen. Robert Plant This is the best solo album, and a must for fans of Led Zeppelin own.
