Noel Gallagher famous once said that the only time there would be an Oasis "best of" collection will be once the band had split up. Yet he counted without the power of the big labels.

So when Sony told that they were releasing a compilation of Oasis in time for Christmas, Gallagher wisely decided to swallow his pride and make sure it has been heavily implicated. So, rather than a lazy 'singles' collection, we Stop the Clocks, with a solid 18 tracks personally selected by Noel, and including not only simple but also album tracks and B-sides. Best of all, there are no specially recorded new material to try the completist.

It's a great move as Oasis have always been more than just A-sides, despite the release of some of the great singles of the past decade. And while the track listing here can be debated for years to come by fans, there's no reason that it demonstrates exactly why Oasis have encroached heavily on the national conscience since their arrival incendiary.

We have five pieces each of the band first two albums, one for each year since Heathen Chemistry and Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, two of last year Do not Believe The Truth and four B-sides. Be Here Now is clear that by its absence.

It opens, inevitably, with Rock N Roll Star, and from the very first guitar riff exciting it is clear that it still sounds like time than ever. This is a song for each child trapped in a small town, dreaming of making a great, and it is sung with such conviction and absolute belief by Liam Gallagher that you can not help but believe in the Appeal "tonight, I am rock'n 'Roll star"

The largest pieces from the first two albums, with Live Forever still capture the sense of indestructible youth, Do not Look Back In Anger still sending chills in the back with its opening for piano and strings, even if we have all heard countless times, Wonderwall is impossible to grow tired of - a true modern classic. Best of all, there Slide Away - the world's largest securities in any group album canon.

The songs do a little pale compared to the Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory equipment, but at least Gallagher had to select the most memorable songs. Thus, we get one of Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants "in a few decent tracks Go Let It Out and Liam's touching ode to Nicole Appleton, Songbird, Heathen Chemistry is the sole representative.

It is the addition of the B-sides that give this compilation another dimension if - mostly showing Noel sensitive acoustic side, they give the lie to the Gallaghers be stereotyped North oiks. Talk Tonight is just fine, so roughly, we have even recorded Noel heard coughing at the start, while Half The World Away (probably better known as the theme for The Royle Family these days) is just as thoughtful and sub - estimated.

There is also room for Acquiesce, generally regarded as the best single Oasis, which has never been - an anthemic power of a song that is one of the few songs that feature the Gallagher brothers duetting. The hearing sing 'cos we need each other, we believe in them "is a strangely touching moment, especially considering the macho attitudes that the two brothers often hide behind.

Of course, the entire value of their fan Oasis salt will all tracks here already, but that's not really the point. Stop the Clocks is the compilation of the year, an opportunity to assess exactly why they are such a band and exactly how Noel Gallagher became the songwriter of his generation. Absolutely essential.
